Snowboarding
To me snowboarding today is a sport with a philosophical background. Itīs a youth movement with its specific philosophy of being different. The top riders however are very professional, commited to their aims and they do receive quite a lot of media coverage. "Young, innovative, cheeky and bold" - the image of snowboarders will remain the same! Apart from the image hard work needs to be done: Training all summer and fall, racing from November till March, being ready for fotoshootings, developing and testing the equipment, raising money through new sponsors, signing contracts at any time.

But to be honest we have to party sometimes and to hang loose again! And it IS relaxing to enjoy a freeriding day with lots of powder!

Training
The training season lasts from May untill November - 3 months of physical workout and 3 months on the snow. I take my preparations very seriously and I fulfill the following schedule: 3 times a week cardio workout, 3 times weight lifting. During my cardio workout I try to vary as much as possible: jogging, biking, swimming and inline skating. Concerning my strength I try to improve endurance, maximum strength and quickness. It is also absolutely vital if you want to improve your technique on the board to train all muscle groups as well as working on your balance. At the beginning of September the Austrian National Team meets on the glaciers of Kaprun and Mölltal and our headcoach, Herbert Ruhdorfer, starts his instructions. Back home my personal coach, Robert Kropiunik, is always in contact with me. 4 days a week we ride our boards at 3000 meters above the sealevel in slaloms and giant slaloms, while in the afternoon we just go jogging. But after a good season of training it all comes down to how strong you are mentally, thatīs why I also work on my will to win, useing psychological techniques.

Olympic Games Nagano 98
After the 2 boarding-federations in Austria had agreed on a fair compromise it was the riders turn make the team. The qualification for the Austrian Team consisting of 4 riders was harder than expected. One 5th and one 7th place in the first of 4 races was just enough to get me under pressure over Christmas. I knew that at least two podium finishes were necessary in the upcoming qualifications in order to get my ticket. After two 2nd places in very bad weather conditions I was quite happy being able to look forward to my first olympic impressions. At that time all four Austrian team members were ranked top 5 of the world, every single race of the entire season saw one of us, if not all 3, on the podium. Forming an excellent team high (medal) hopes accompanied us to Nagano. As best Austrian boarder (4th place) I missed the Gold Medal by 0,38 seconds - any questions?

Injury
Right after the seasonīs last race in Davos, which I was happy to win, we planned 10 days videoshootings for a Japanese company. Trying to show the pleasures of freeriding to large audience I crashed so hard in deep and fresh powder that I broke my left shinbone several times. As the injury was very complicated the doctors at Davos had to implant 8 screws and a titanium plate. My training season had to be stopped.
However I was able to race at the first FIS World Cups, having changed federations in the meantime. In order to stay in the National Team I had to be among the best Austrians, even though the pain was unbearable. AS I was finished 12th and 4th at FIS World Cups the head coach accepted my staying in the team. In the meantime I suffered from a chronical inflamation on my shinbone, my doctor explained it to me this way:the bone absorbs certain hits and transports them directly through my hardboots to my injury. The implanted titanium on the other hand, being one of the hardest materials, does not move at all!
So I really had no choice but quit for this season. After the implant was taken out in April 99 the pain was finally gone and I was happy to highly motivated focus on my comeback.

Comeback
After a 12 month break one lacks the necessary self confidence. So it is good to regain it by timing training runs while getting ready for the first races. In Tignes, which was the season starter, I finished 4th, although my first run
was really not good at all. Just a week later I injured myself again joking around during the free training session of the Boardercross in Kaprun. Already wearing my backbag I was talking to my coach and jumping the big straight jumps until I realised that I was way too high and, which was even more scary, way too much sideways! The impact on the flat and hard glacier ice was too much for my shoulder, I tore some ligaments and my right shoulder hurt until January.
After some average results in January and February I finally was back on top in March: 1st place at the FIS WC GS in Park City! Although the season was almost over I finished 4 times more on the podium and pulled off a victory over dominating Matthieu Bozzetto. So I finished 5th in GS, 6th in Parallel and 5th Overall.
This year I was intensifying my workout even more, up to 33 hours per week, in order to not only being able to conserve my performance of March, but to become a serial winner again......
